During World War II, there was a need to move huge numbers of troops across the country. This resulted in the construction of large numbers of troop sleepers. After the war ended, there was little use for these cars and so the railroads converted them for other purposes including baggage cars, express box cars, mail cars and MOW cars. These cars originally built in the early 1940's went on to have long service lives with some remaining in service in one form or another into the 1970's.
