Baldwin's RF-16 Sharknose diesels' distinctive contours were inspired by Pennsy's T1 class steam locomotive and certainly appear related to the GG1. Known as excellent "luggers," the Sharks saw service hauling heavy ore and coal drags.

The RF-16 Shark beat the F7 with 100 additional horsepower and tied the FA2 with 1600 horsepower.

Contrary to many reports, Baldwin diesels could be run in MU operation with diesels built by other makers if the units were ordered with the proper MU equipment from the Baldwin catalog.

There are two surviving Sharks owned by the Escanaba and Lake Superior Railroad. DID YOU KNOW? Not even the most expensive of brass models have accurately modeled the Sharknose's unique front end profile. PCM's Sharknose is properly modeled with the correct front end profilean industry first.

The American Locomotive Company (ALCO) introduced the PA1 locomotive in 1946 to offer direct competition with EMD's successful "E" Series Passenger diesels. The first PA1 celebrated Alco's 75,000th loco to roll out of the erecting shop. This attractive 2000HP loco was their high-speed passenger diesel. Having more horsepower than their leading competitor, Alco felt that they had a fleet-ready competitive product.

With orders from 16 railroads, Alco was able to produce a total of 247 "PA" units and 47 "PB" units until production ceased in May 1953. The PA locomotives remained in U.S. service until 1978 and were a very important part of the time period known as the "Transition Era" where steam was replaced with the diesel.

PA1's were stylish, sleek, powerful and were very well suited for America's passenger and fast freight trains. Additionally, their 65' 8" bodies became excellent billboard advertising for the railroads that they served with pride.

ALCO, a very established steam locomotive manufacturer, saw an opportunity at the end of World War II to enter the cab-unit diesel market. Following the very successful RS1, 2, and 3 series of road switchers, Alco offered a newly designed locomotive and, thus, was born the FA1/FB1 series.

The FA was designed to compete with EMD's very popular "F" units. The FA was designed for freight service; the complementary PA was designed for passenger operation. FA/FB production began in January of 1946 and ran through August of 1950. Alco produced 393 FA1 locomotives and 225 FB1 booster locomotives.

At 51'6" and delivering 1,600HP, Alco's four-cycle RD1 constant pressure super turbocharger increased engine output by a whopping 90% over a normal aspirated engine. The FA1's capably handled their share of freight duty as the major railroads sought the economy that the diesel-electric locomotive offered.

If you model this era or just enjoy cool diesels, the Alco FA's will be a welcome addition to your layout.

EMD's F3's began showing up on the rails just as World War II was ending. As the wartime restrictions were being lifted, a tremendous burden was placed on the railroads as economic prosperity began to take off across the U.S. The days of the glorious steamers were numbered as many railroads were in dire need of motive power replacements. Add the economic advantages the F3's offered to the railroads, and the rest is history. Progress is always served.

The 1500 horsepower F3's were remarkably proficient at both heavy freight as well as fast-passenger service. With a body design that defines what many consider to be the most attractive diesel ever produced, the F3 offered a large canvas for the wonderfully imaginative and colorful paint schemes that many railroads proudly utilized to show off their passenger trains.

EMD was to build 1107 "A" units and 694 "B" units before production was changed to the newer F7's in February of 1949. Don't worry, PCM will deliver this legendary locomotive to your layout in the quantities you order. A truly must have piece for your layout!

Introduced in February 1952 and produced through November 1953, the SD7 was the 1500HP six axle big brother to the GP7. Riding on six axle, three-motor trucks, they were designed to offer more starting tractive effort in "road" service than the GP7. EMD's introduction of an A1A freight locomotive led them to design the SD7 from the ground up. In appearance, they are very similar to the GP7 only with a longer hood. The radiators are grouped together at the end of the long hood and not separated as was seen on the GP7. The grill assembly protrudes from the side of the hood whereas with the GP7 the grills are fit flush with the hood.

As built, the SD7 very closely resembles the SD9 with the visual spotting features being the boarding steps and a variation of the classification lights being the most noticeable differences. The SD7 (for Special Duty) was a massive locomotive at 60 feet 8 inches from coupler to coupler and weighing 360,000 pounds. It was powered by the same reliable 1500HP 567B V-16 two-cycle diesel engine as the GP7 and F7. With a maximum speed range between 55 and 89 miles per hour, depending on the gearing ratio selected, and a tractive force of 90,000 pounds, the SD series was here to stay. With the SD7, EMD introduced the "lightweight" Flexicoil truck which enabled these locomotives to be used on branchlines as well as for road service. These trucks were so smooth that the SD7 was compared to "riding in a luxury car."

With the advent of 1954, EMD made a conservative marketing push against the competition with the announcement of their "Nine Line" series. This consisted of the introduction of new locomotive model numbers, the SW9/1200, the F9A/B, the GP9, and the SD9.

EMD produced 807 of the 12-cylinder SW1500 switchers between 1966 and 1974. These prolific switchers are easily recognized by their high mounted walkways, tall-low radius arched roof cab, dual exhaust stacks and a long hood headlight. The SW's were offered with either the standard AAR type A or the optional Flexicoil designed trucks. More than half of the railroads chose the Flexicoil trucks.

EMD's SW1500 was a very capable switcher that saw distinguished duty for many railroads. Precision Craft's SW1500 is ready for duty on your layout. Like all PCM locomotives, the EMD SW1500 looks, operates, and sounds great!
