In 1942 the City of San Antonio purchased San Antonio Public Service Company when American Light and Traction was forced to sell because of anti-trust litigation. The J.T. Deely plant consists of two coal-fired steam turbine generators each rated at 446 megawatts. Unit one came online in 1977 with the second being activated two years later. Since the plant has opened it has burned Powder River coal hauled by a fleet of 819 Thrall gondolas. Initially the coal traveled via Burlington Northern and Southern Pacific to San Antonio, but later changed to a Chicago & NorthWestern and Union Pacific routing.
