The B&O M-53 boxcar was a unique and innovative design. Developed in the 1930’s, it was one of the most distinctive designs of the late steam era and example continued on into the early diesel years. U shaped frame members were attached to the car underframe. Steel sheets were then attached to form the shell of the car. This unique approach was also applied to the cabooses and covered hoppers. The design proved to be very durable with 1897 or the original 2000 cars remaining in service in 1960.
