In 1955, the Pennsylvania Railroad, Norfolk & Western Railway, and Rail-Trailer Corporation formed the Trailer Train Company. Their goal was to standardize the then-new trailer-on-flat-car industry and provide member companies with a pool of shared cars. The company name was chosen from 6,000 entries in a contest for Pennsy employees. The firm changed its name to TTX Company in 1991, and its fleet today numbers more than 200,000 cars of various types, shared among eight owners that include most U.S. and Canadian Clas s1 railroads.
