As the steam era closed and the diesel era took hold, railroads were left with a variety of steam locomotives and tenders. While some steam locomotives were put to alternate uses, many were scrapped. The same occurred for most tenders, but some were kept by railroads and repurposed for work train or other uses. This was a practical decision to make, as they had built for heavy duty use and built to last. These repurposed tenders went on to serve in their new capacities for decades in some cases.
