Atlas has announced a pair of new products that combine to make a new passenger train operated by various transit systems. The Bombardier ALP-45DP is a “dual mode” Locomotive and new next generation Bombardier multilevel passenger cars make an impressive and ultra-modern commuter train. Please note that all actual model pictures shown below are for the HO Scale model of the version that include all the same features as the N Scale model.
Bombardier ALP-45DP "Dual Mode" Locomotive
The ALP-45DP is a “dual mode” locomotive, capable of drawing power from either overhead electrical wires or its own pair of 12-cylinder Caterpillar diesel engines. These flexible locomotives were designed to provide a one-seat commute from NJ TRANSIT’s various diesel-only lines into the electrified territory that leads to New York City’s Penn Station. This fulfills the requirement of not operating diesels through the North River Tunnels and within the subterranean Penn Station complex. Produced by Bombardier Transportation in Kassel, Germany, the first ALP-45DP locomotive entered service on NJ TRANSIT on May 30, 2012.
NJ TRANSIT’s 35 ALP-45DP locomotives are commonly seen on commuter trains traversing the Morristown Line, Montclair-Boonton Line, Raritan Valley Line, and North Jersey Coast Line. These lines do not have overhead electrical wires for their entire length, necessitating a change of power source somewhere en-route. Previously, locomotives or entire trainsets would have to be changed, inconveniencing riders. The ALP-45DP alleviates this need, performing the switch from diesel to electric power (or vice versa) in just under two minutes during a routine station stop.
This release includes four road numbers. All are available in DCC Ready & DCC w/Sound versions.

Gold version includes:
- ESU LokSound decoder, supporting all DCC programming modes
- Flexible mapping of function keys F0 to F28
- A total of six DCC function outputs
- Follows all NMRA DCC standards and recommended practices
Analog (DC) Operation Features:
- The LokSound Select Dual-Mode decoder allows your Atlas Gold Series locomotive to be used on DC as well as on DCC layouts.
- Please note that the Atlas Quantum Engineer will NOT operate an Atlas Gold Series locomotive equipped with a LokSound Select decoder on an analog (DC) layout. However, the sound and lighting functions of the LokSound Select decoder in the Atlas Gold locomotive can be controlled by an easy-to-use basic DCC system
- Also note that on a DC-powered layout, a DCC and sound equipped locomotive (such as the Atlas Gold locomotive) CANNOT be consisted with another locomotive that does not also have both DCC and sound. (This statement does NOT apply to DCC-equipped locomotives operating on a DCC layout.)
Bombardier Multi-Level Cab Car
Bombardier multi-level cab cars are used on the opposite end of the train from the locomotive to facilitate “push-pull” operations, where the engineer in the cab car can control the locomotive pushing from the other end of the train. A cab car provides an engineer with all of the same controls as a locomotive cab, allowing the train to reverse direction without turning around. Cab cars also include all standard locomotive safety features, such as a horn and bell. The multi-levels’ fixed 2-2 seating arrangement provides ample legroom and maximizes passenger comfort while increasing capacity.

Bombardier Multi-Level Trailer
Bombardier multi-level trailer coaches without cabs operate with the multi-level cab cars. These cars can can be equipped a toilet and have a passenger seating capacity of 132 commuters. Trailer cars that do not have a toilet have seating for 142 passengers. The multi-level trailer cars are always operated in matching sets (with a multi-level cab car on one end and a locomotive on the other), and these cars carry commuters over 2.2 billion miles every year.
The Atlas multi-level trailer cars, are offered in both prototype configurations, with and without toilets.
