Gondolas have been around since the early days of railroading. Initially, they were used to carry coal, but have gone on to carry all kinds of products and materials. As time has passed, the type and size of gondolas has increased. This particular type of car was introduced in the 1960's and many examples remain in service today. They were intially used for coal service, but are often seen in scrap and tie load service today.
