Dear N Scale Modelers,

While growing up in BC I fondly remember what was my favorite gas station, BA. I was very disappointed when in 1970 our corner BA station became "Gulf". A few years ago one of our customers called and asked if I remembered BA Gas Stations, and suggested I was probably too young to remember.

British American Oil Company Tank Car Artwork

Our customer's father used to work as an accountant for British American Oil in Ottawa, and later moved the family to Saskatchewan when they bought a family farm. He asked if we would ever consider running a special run of the cars? We told him, we would need images and data of the cars to even consider it. Well he said he had done all the research, and supplied it to us.

A couple of weeks ago I was talking to Tim Horton (not the one who owns a chain of donut shops), and he told me the BA tank cars were frequently seen on PGE/ BCR. The cars were common all across Canada from 1949 - mid 1970's.

In fact one of Tim's friends had just gone to great length to make custom decals to create the very same cars for his layout. The graphics are very attractive and the car stands out on a layout. So if you model PGE. BRC, CNR, CPR pay attention to this release.

So when we were collecting images, we noticed some of the B/A Tank Cars had "BRITISH AMERICAN OIL COMPANY LIMITED" stenciled in large white lettering on the left hand side of the car. We have had many requests to re-run the B/A tank Cars and decided now would be a good time.

Here is what the first set looked like, the new set will have added lettering to the left of the car

In the early years of the 20th century, oil and oil products were becoming the "black gold" that we know them to be today. The British American Oil Company Limited was organized with a Province of Ontario Charter that was issued on October 17, 1906. The charter was granted by King Edward VII to B/A Oil.

As the years went by and oil became more and more important, B/A Oil grew. With this growth, B/A Oil made more and more use of rail transport of their products. So much so that the sight of B/A Oil tank cars was a common across Canada.

While B/A Oil eventually disappeared to be replaced by other companies in the oil industry, their legacy lives us. So do many who grew up seeing the many B/A Oil tank cars on trains in their youth. Unfortunately, for modelers, this company has been overlooked by model manufacturers. So with the lack of available models, modelers have had to make do with decorating their own cars, such as the one below:
