Athearn - Bulkhead Flat Cars - A December Release Announced for N Scale
Popular since the late 1920s when these were first produced by General Steel Castings. They are still in service for many railroads.

They have all the uses of a flat car, and more. Bulkhead flatcars are designed with sturdy end-walls, aka bulkheads, to prevent loads from shifting past the ends of the car. Loads typically carried are pipe, steel slabs, utility poles and lumber.

Today they are frequently used for Maintenance of Way (MOW) trains, handy to dump used ties, rails, etc.
