This 30’ composite frame gondola is painted box car red with white lettering. It runs on Arch Bar trucks. It was considered an impossible task, but WP&Y literally blasted its way through coastal mountains in only 26 months; the 110 miles of WP&YR rails was completed with the driving of the golden spike on July 29, 1900, in Carcross, Yukon Territory, Canada. It connectedthe deep water port of Skagway, Alaska to Whitehorse, Yukon and beyond to northwest Canada and interior Alaska.
Today, the WP&YR is Alaska’s most popular shore excursion carrying over 431,000 passengers in 2006 during the May to September tourism season operating on the first 67.5 miles of the original 110 mile line.
