Athearn Roundhouse has announced the 40 ft Single Sheathed Box Cars

PROTOTYPE AND BACKGROUND INFO:

40 ft single sheathed wood box cars were the result of USRA actions to address a shortage of rolling stock after the United States entered World War I. There was a need to quickly build large numbers of cars to carry equipment and material related to the war effort. These cars were designed to be easy to build with lower use of both wood and steel. While all steel box car construction was starting to occur, war time needs for steel ensured these cars would have wood sides. Thousands of these cars were built even after the war had ended. They proved to be a durable and serviceable design with examples of these cars remaining in service in one form or another all the way into the 1960's.

• Separately applied brake wheel

• Machined metal wheels with RP25 contours

• Body-mounted McHenry operating scale knuckle couplers

• Weighted for optimum performance

• Fully-assembled and ready to run

• Highly-detailed, injection-molded body

• Painted and printed for realistic decoration

• Minimum radius: 15”
