Athearn Genesis has announced the SD45-2 Diesel Locomotives
Santa Fe - Bicentennial
In 1975 the Santa Fe decided to celebrate the Bicentennial of the USA in 1976 by re-painting 5 SD45-2’s (5700-5704) in a striking red, white and blue paint scheme. 5704 is currently being restored into this very same paint scheme and upon completion BNSF will be donating it to the Southern California Railway Museum in Perris, CA.

Santa Fe
In the early 1970’s EMD introduced their -2 series line which essentially was a program of upgrading many of their existing product offerings with new modularized electrical systems and other improvements. The SD45 was upgraded to the SD45-2. Santa Fe would eventually purchase 90 of them with first group arriving in the blue & yellow “pinstripe” scheme that was being phased out in favor of the new yellow bonnet scheme. Some of the last units in this order came with factory installed air conditioners.

Norfolk Southern
Rebuilt with 16-cylinder engines, these former EL units are still earning their keep on today’s Norfolk Southern. The units retain their distinctive 5000 gallon fuel tanks and are often seen running in pairs.

Norfolk Southern - Heritage
The former EL 3669, NS 1700 was repainted into Erie Lackawanna Heritage paint at Chattanooga, TN, in September 2015. The unit continues to operate today and has been seen from Ohio to New Jersey, often running with other 170X series units

PROTOTYPE SPECIFIC INFORMATION
The SD45-2 was an initial success; it was a complete improvement or upgrade as part of EMD’s “Dash 2” line; it had little to almost absolutely no flaws during the early stages of production and during the model’s official introduction. It was both popular and compatible with the original SD45 as well, with it’s large 20-cylinder engine. The SD45-2 lasted somewhat longer than most SD45 units on various owners roster’s.
