Athearn has announced the RTR RS-3 Diesel Locomotives

 

CP Rail

During 1954, Montreal Locomotive Works (ALCO of Canada) built 34 RS3’s for Canadian Pacific in two orders. These colorful “Action Red” painted units were repainted in this scheme during the 1970’s for better visibility.

 

CP FEATURES:

• Nathan M3 horn mounted on bracket

• Large Sinclair Antenna

• Large “mutli-mark” scheme

• Single headlight

 

 

 

Burlington Northern

BN’s roster of RS-3s came courtesy of the SP&S and NP (along with two former GN units which had been sold to the SP&S in 1959). Being 20+ years old at the time of the merger, their time on the roster was relatively short, but many units did last long enough to get a coat of “Cascade Green”.

 

BN FEATURES:

• Nathan M-3 horn

• Late style pilots

• Western-Cullen beacon; working flash effect on DCC+sound versions

• Firecracker antenna

• Long hood-forward operation

 

 

 

Rio Grande

DRGW purchased five RS-3s in 1951 and used them for local and switching service. Along with the S2s and PAs, they were the only ALCOs on the roster. Only unit 5204 was ever repainted into the black switcher scheme; the other units wore their original paint until retirement. By 1966 the units were off of the roster.

DRGW FEATURES:

• Dual single-note horns

Green Bay & Western

Running from Green Bay to Winona, the Green Bay & Western served Wisconsin for over 100 years. The GBW was known for their roster of ALCO locomotives, and it’s not surprising that they rostered several examples of the RS-3. Originally they wore a red paint scheme with a light grey stripe, which was later simplified into solid red with large GBW initials on the hood, as depicted by our model.

• Warning beacon on cab; working flash effect on DCC+sound models

 

 

 

This B-B road switcher was a ubiquitous sight on American rails beginning in the 1950s as American Locomotive (ALCo) captured 40% of the diesel locomotive market. These locomotives went on to have long service lives with operators all across North America. Some examples still remain in use today.
