One of the most popular engines in the “70” series, the SD70M from Kato USA will be released in new road number and new paint scheme variations in early 2023, with Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific “Flat Radiator” engines being joined by two special engine-specific paint schemes.
Even more exciting is Union Pacific # 1979 “We Are One”, painted to commemorate UP’s Employee Resource Groups that promote Cultural Awareness and Inclusion, among other things.
First is Union Pacific SD70M #4015 which is used in Excursion services alongside the “Big Boy” due to the shared road number, which has silver trucks and other unit specific paint details.

Introduced in 1992, EMD SD70M was a 4000 horsepower locomotive that ran on EMD’s new steerable truck design, known as the HTCR-II radial truck. This new truck allowed the locomotive to transfer its power to the rails more efficiently, which in turn enabled two SD70M locomotives to pull a train that would have taken 3 SD40-2’s to pull. The DC brother of the SD70MAC, the SD70M was primarily put to work hauling coal trains due to its high pulling capacity.
