BNSF Family Tree Series #3 BNSF/ex-Great Northern 50’ Double-Door Boxcar
Built by Great Northern in the late 1950s, this 50’ double-door boxcar with Bettendorf trucks was later relegatedto Green Veneer service. The “A” side doors were removed, and the opening staked with larger timber. The “B”side doors remained, though welded shut.
Great Northern 40’ Double-Door Boxcar
Built in the early 1940s, this 40’ double-door boxcar with Roller Bearing trucks was re-built in 1962 from the ground up, with upgraded steel construction to modern standards, including double doors. It was used in general service and had a 3,763 cubic-foot capacity. Great Northern was a Class 1 railroad founded in 1881 and eventually was merged with Northern Pacific and others to form Burlington Northern Railroad in 1970.
Gulf, Mobile & Ohio 40’ Double-Door Boxcar
Built in the late 1940s, this 40’ double-door boxcar with Bettendorf trucks was rebuilt in the late 1960s by theFrascati Shops. It had a 3,899 cubic foot capacity and Evans DF-2 loaders. Founded in 1938 through a mergerof the Gulf, Mobile & Northern and the Mobile & Ohio railroads, GM&O became a medium-sized Class I railroadwith a main line between Mobile, Alabama, Kansas City, Kansas, and Chicago, Illinois.
Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe 50’ Boxcar
Built in the late 1950s in a series of 500, this FE-30 class, 50’ boxcar with Bettendorf trucks was used in auto-mobile service and later assigned to general service usage. Founded in 1859, Santa Fe was one of the largest railroads in North America up until 1996, when it merged with Burlington Northern to form BNSF.
Built for a CSX heritage railroad, these 2-bay covered hoppers with Barber Roller Bearing trucks were shopped and repainted into the CSX tan paint scheme in the mid-1980s but retained their NYC reporting marks. CSX was formed through the 1986 mergers of Chessie System and Seaboard System/ Family Lines, and continues to operate today across more than 21,000 miles of track in the Eastern United States.
Built for Burlington Northern in 1971, these 4,692 cubic foot, 3-bay covered hoppers with Barber Roller Bearingtrucks were used for grain loading in the Midwest. Burlington Northern was formed through the mergers of Great Northern and Northern Pacific in 1970, and then merged with ATSF in 1995 to form BNSF.
