The Pennsylvania Railroad built 1,650 of these cars in 1930 and 1931. More than 35% of the series remained in service at the time of the Penn Central merger, and a number continued generating revenue in the Conrail era.
Lehigh Valley obtained fifty of the G26 class from the Pennsylvania in the early 1930s to augment its mill gondola fleet.
The body and detail parts are injection molded plastic, while the underframe is diecast. The drop ends can be positioned either up or down. Intricate and accurate detail is present inside as well as outside. The model rides at the prototypically-correct height above the rails, on Micro-Trains truck frames fitted with low-profile wheelsets. The style of truck frame and hand brake utilized is specified with each model. The model is equipped with Micro-Trains #1015 knuckle couplers.
The model will not traverse less than 12½-inch radius curves.
Class G26A

The Pennsylvania Railroad built 700 of the G26A sub-class in the fourth quarter of 1941. The sub-class remained in service at the time of the Penn Central merger, and a number continued generating revenue in the Conrail era.
Norfolk and Western built 25 cars based on the G26A design in 1941 and classified them as G3, and built an additional 25 cars in 1949 and classified them as G3a. These N&W cars lasted into the late 1980s.
The body and detail parts are injection molded plastic, while the underframe is diecast. The drop ends can be positioned either up or down. In the 1960s, a number of Pennsylvania class G26 and G26A cars were rebuilt with larger reinforcement ribs and reclassified as G26C. The sub-class remained in service at the time of the Penn Central merger, and a number continued generating revenue in the Conrail era.
