Atlas is excited to announce New 55 Ton Fishbelly Coal Hoppers

The 55-ton Fishbelly Coal Hopper, originally built in the 1930s, represents a critical era in railroading history. With its distinctive fishbelly side design, it was engineered to maximize load capacity while maintaining structural strength. These steam-era hoppers were versatile workhorses, efficiently transporting coal from mines to power plants and industrial centers across the nation. Even as diesel locomotives began to dominate the railroads, these hoppers remained a dependable fixture, seamlessly bridging the transition between steam and diesel operations. Their rugged construction and reliability ensured they could withstand the demands of heavy freight operations, making them indispensable to coal-hauling railroads well into the mid-20th century. Today, they stand as a testament to the ingenuity and durability of early freight.
