The Metra F40PH is a workhorse diesel-electric locomotive that has been a staple of Chicago’s commuter rail system since the 1970s. Originally built by EMD and later rebuilt by various contractors, the F40PH is known for its distinctive “bulldog” nose, reliability, and iconic rooftop air horn. These locomotives power many of Metra’s daily trains, providing dependable service across the region. With their distinctive blue and gray paint schemes and bold Metra logos, the F40PHs have become a familiar sight to generations of Chicagoland commuters.
