From the Great Lakes to the Upper Mississippi: Railroads of the Northern Midwest, 1972–1999 by Jeremy F. Plant and Jeffrey G. Plant is a vivid photographic journey through nearly three decades of railroad history across Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa. From the rugged ore lines of the Upper Peninsula to the river valleys of the Mississippi and the farmlands of the Hawkeye State, the authors capture a transitional era when classic first-generation diesels gave way to modern power, and when mergers and abandonments reshaped the Midwestern rail landscape.
Drawing on decades of summer expeditions and an unmatched eye for detail, the Plants present a richly illustrated chronicle of locomotives, liveries, and lines—many now gone or changed beyond recognition. Whether following Alcos on the Green Bay & Western, F-units along the Mississippi, or the rebirth of short lines like the I&M Rail Link, From the Great Lakes to the Upper Mississippi is both a historical record and a heartfelt tribute to the region’s enduring railroad spirit.

Since the railroad era began, New York State's Capital Region has been an area of convergence -- most famously for the New York Central, Delaware & Hudson, and the Boston & Maine. However, from the 1960s through the 1990s, this area underwent a lot of change. Mergers and abandonments left the Capital Region railroad scene scaled back at the end of this era. Author Tim Stockwell -- who was a child in the 1980s and 1990s -- witnessed a lot of this change, but had not yet picked up a camera. Through the lenses of photographers like Jim Connor, Jeff Plant, Jeremy Plant, John Sesonske, Gordy Smith, and Jack Wright, Tim takes us on a journey through the Capital Region, with special attention paid to lines that no longer exist.
Volume 2 starts in Albany, then takes a geographical tour south and west of the city.

When Conrail began operations in 1976, it inherited a patchwork fleet of weary first-generation EMD Geeps — locomotives like the GP7, GP9, GP9B, GP18, and GP20 — from its six bankrupt predecessor railroads. First-Generation Conrail Geeps tells the story of these classic locomotives and the roles they played in keeping Conrail’s system running during its earliest and most challenging years. Drawing from extensive rosters, detailed research, and hundreds of rare photographs, this book chronicles how these dependable workhorses served in every corner of the system, from bustling main lines to the most remote branch lines.
The book also covers Conrail’s extensive rebuilding efforts that produced the GP8s and GP10s — programs designed to extend the lives of aging Geeps at a fraction of the cost of new power. With in-depth coverage of both the original and rebuilt locomotives, First-Generation Conrail Geeps offers readers a complete look at how Conrail’s shop forces, contractors, and management transformed a worn-out roster into a reliable backbone of local, yard, and secondary service. This volume is an essential addition for fans of Conrail, EMD locomotives, or American railroad history.

Erie Lackawanna Cabooses is the definitive reference work on the cabooses of the Erie Lackawanna Railroad and those conveyed to it by its predecessors, the Erie and the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western. Covering every caboose owned by the EL between 1960 and 1976, this book documents each class in detail, from the eight-wheel wooden designs to the last welded-steel bay window cars that served into the Conrail and Delaware & Hudson eras. The book explores the design evolution, construction methods, paint schemes, and service histories of the 386 cabooses that made up the EL’s roster, with extensive historical background that traces their lineage back through decades of railroad innovation and consolidation.
Meticulously researched and richly detailed, Erie Lackawanna Cabooses blends historical narrative with technical depth to create a comprehensive portrait of these distinctive pieces of rolling stock. Enthusiasts will find in-depth coverage of each class, paint scheme, and rebuild program, along with stories of individual cars that survived into preservation. Whether you’re a student of railroad history, a modeler seeking accuracy, or simply an admirer of the Erie Lackawanna’s legacy, this book is an indispensable addition to any railfan’s library.
