The Irregular and Irreverent Bulletin from Rapido Trains Inc.  •  Volume 7

Dear Rapido Customer,

Welcome to another edition of the Rapido Telegraph. As our product line expands, so will the frequency of these newsletters. This means we should be able to send out more than a couple a year!

TurboNews

We have finally started TurboTrain production! Currently, the factory is working on the Intermediate Cars. Once they are assembled, wired and painted, work will begin on the Power Dome Cars. We are doing the ICs first because we still need to make some improvements to the wiring in the Power Dome Cars. We expect to start delivery of the trains in the late spring or early summer. All of the trains will be here by the end of the summer/early fall. The long production period is due to the fact that we are operating EVERY SINGLE TURBO on a test track before putting it in the box. How's that for quality control?

We've received the first test model with decoders installed from MRC, and they sound fantastic! The sample is back at MRC for lights programming, but while we had it in the office we shot a movie of the train starting up and pulling away. Click on the photo below to watch the movie. Check out the Gyralite on the nose!

TurboTrain: A Journey

TurboTrain: A Journey

In the mean time, my book, TurboTrain: A Journey has been published and is now available at your favorite hobby shop. Using many internal railway documents, I tell the story of the train from conception to retirement, and I dispel most of the myths about it at the same time. Did you know that the CN-VIA Turbo was one of the most reliable trains in North America in the 1970s? The book is 136 full-color pages, with well over 200 photographs, and at $24.95 is a real bargain. If you have ordered a TurboTrain, the book will come with your train when it is released. If you're like me, you won't be able to wait that long...

"Totally Wired" Telephone Poles

A lot of people have been asking us about how these work. If a picture is worth a thousand words, a movie must be worth a a few million. Click on the image below to see our "Totally Wired" Telephone Poles being installed on our display layout. Dan pre-drilled the holes in the foam with a screwdriver (that took about two minutes), and I installed a line of six wired poles in less than a minute. Realistically, it will take you half an hour to an hour to install 12 poles and glue and trim the lines at the ends.

You can easily join two or more sets of poles together to create a string of "Totally Wired" poles as long as you want.

"Easy-Peasy" SHORTY Lighting Inside a Shorty Roof

"Easy Peasy" SHORTY Passenger Car Lighting

Our "Easy Peasy" batttery-powered passenger car lighting has proved to be very popular, but a lot of our customers want to shorten them to fit in their "shorty" passenger cars. Well, we are pleased to announce new SHORTY lighting sets. These will fit in most HO Scale 72' long cars and in the clerestories of all Branchline® heavyweights.

Just like our standard "Easy Peasy" lighting, each set includes batteries and the Rapido Lighter magic wand for turning the lights on and off. The bulbs have a slightly green tint to simulate fluorescent fixtures seen through green-tinted passenger car window glass.

CN "Noodle Scheme" Dayniters

cn scheme

CN's ground-breaking "wet noodle" scheme - still modern almost 50 years later

The deadline for ordering our new Dayniters in CN's "wet noodle" paint scheme is March 31st. Make sure your dealer places your order before that date.

This paint scheme was in service on Canadian passenger trains from 1961 to 1995. CN's striking modern image is just as fresh today as it was almost 50 years ago when it was first introduced. It is still used on CN's locomotive fleet, making it one of the longest-lived corporate brand identities in North American railroad history.

CN's "Dayniter" cars were used in Canada between 1971 and 1992, although most were repainted into VIA colors by 1980.
