June 28, 2011 - M.T.H. Electric Trains is advising all customers who have purchased the Hi-Rail or Scale Wheel Proto-Sound 3.0 equipped O Scale Chapelon 2-3-1 Pacific and Proto-Sound 3.0 equipped O Scale Class 2-4-1A steam locomotive to cease operating the locomotive due to a missing component that will eventually interrupt communication between the locomotive tender and locomotive boiler. A kit is being developed that will allow service centers and customers to install the missing component. The kit will be distributed at no charge to any service center or customer who purchased the affected locomotives.

Both the 2-3-1 and 241A locomotives utilize a larger motor than the initial O Scale Proto-Sound 3.0 equipped steam locomotive, the NYC 4-4-0 Empire State Express which was released by M.T.H. Electric Trains in early 2011. That smaller locomotive is not affected by the missing component and is not subject to this Product Advisory. The 2008 2-3-1 Pacific equipped with Proto-Sound 2.0 is also NOT affected by this advisory.

The component kit will include the necessary parts and instructions on how to conduct the upgrade. Installation of the parts may require light soldering skills. Customers not comfortable with conducting this fix can return the tender to a service center for warranty repair. Customers who do conduct the component fix on their own will be provided with an online inducement to the M.T.H. website store.
