Southern Pacific #6051's story began in late 1954 when the engine and eight additional E9As arrived on the property, resplendent in Daylight colors. Purchased to retire the last steam locos in passenger service, the units were assigned to the Los Angeles pool. Forced into early retirement in 1969, fortune smiled on the 6051, which was eventually donated to the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society. In 1978, the group deeded the big E unit to the California State Railroad Museum (CSRM). The next few years were spent on display by the Sacramento station, and in storage at SP's Sacramento General Shops until construction of the Museum could be completed. When the museum opened in 1981, #6051 was a key part of the celebration and shortly afterwards, cosmetic and mechanical restoration work began in earnest. Once more in its original paint and under its own power, the 6051 made a triumphant return in 1985. More trips followed and today the historic unit, the only preserved SP passenger diesel, has become a favorite with railfans everywhere.
