The PRR designed and built these cars to haul ore from docks in Philadelphia and Cleveland to steel mills in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. Conrail's G39 class was designed to carry lighter grades of iron ore. Sam Rea Shops built 1000 in 1961. Conrail's G39A class was built in 1964 by the Sam Rea Shops, numbering 1000 cars. 110 of these cars were given the experimental foam insulation on the outside to try to keep the taconite pellets from freezing into a solid chunk. Conrail's G39B class originated by equipping older G39 class cars with more modern trucks.
