The 285 Sunrise Express was a new sleeper EMU built in 1998 to replace the 583 and Blue passenger trains on some services. 285 series trains owned by JR West are classified into -0 subseries and those by JR Central are classified as -3000 sub-series numbers. All 285 series trains consist of 7 cars, two powered and five trailing, and are elegantly streamlined despite their bilevel design.

Sunrise trains have an advantage over airline travel in that they arrive in destination cities in the morning before the first airline flights, and do not require travel between the airport and city centers. Sunrise trains are also used by passengers who missed the Shinkansen super express that runs along with Sunrise Izumo between Okayama and Tokyo but ceases operation at night.
