The 313 Series Electric Car was built since 1999 as a new standard type of JR Tokai, replacing the now defunct 103 and 113 series (for which it had become impossible to get replacement and repair parts for). It runs in almost all areas of JR Tokai line.

The flexibility of its operation -- such as operation with 4 cars, 4+2, 4+4, 2, etc. - results in many styles in actual service. Today, the 313 series is used on local services of many JR Central lines besides special rapid services of the Tokaido line and the rapid services of the Chuo line.
