The new book this week is MVP's first hardbound. Steam over Donner by Duncan Still is a chronological, pictorial history of Southern Pacific's Sierra Nevada Mountain crossing between Roseville, California and Reno, Nevada. The photos in the book are mostly black & white action photos measuring 10.5" wide by 6.25" tall The photos come from the late Will C. Whittaker collection with majority of the photos take by Wil and many were taken by his longtime friend and railfan buddy Al Phelps. The photos date from the late 1930s to the mid 1950s. Duncan has compiled data on train movements that include type of train, locomotives used, trip duration, average speed, etc. There are 176 pages plus full color end sheets, full page b&w action photos on the cover sheet (which is a photo on the actual hard cover, both front and back cover) and there is a full color dust jacket with two different watercolor painting showing action on Donner Pass.
