Specially designed as a Sherpa or helper locomotive, the EF63 helper locomotive is used to provide extra power through mountain passes such as the Usui pass on the Shinetsu Main Line.

The Type-2 EF63 Runs with the 189 Series Asama JNR Passenger Cars, and differs slightly from the Type-1 EF63. Together, they ran from 1975-1997, with the EF63 units acting as uphill assistants for the Asama trains, appropriately named for the mountains in the region that they ran.
