EF65 1019 was dedicated to heading the Super-Express Rainbow, a joyful passenger train for a group of tourists in 1987 and was very popular until it retired in 1998, passing the role to its successor EF65 1118.

Both locomotives are adorned with a special paint scheme having a large white EF65 logo on the side of red body.

The EF65 1118 (Late version), while having a similar appearance to its predecessor, pulls a new style of Japanese type passenger cars, the 14 Series Yutori Passenger Cars.
