The 201 series is a type of Electric Multiple Unit rolling stock used on some commuter lines by East Japan Railway Company and West Japan Railway Company (both formerly Japanese National Railways) since 1979.

It was the first JNR train to use electronic chopper control.

Introtuced to the Chuo Main Line (a trunk line of JR, run by both JR East and JR Central) in 1981, these EMUs ran until 2006 when they were replaced by the newer E233 series.
