Description:

The Atlantic Coast Line (ACL) purchased 60-ft arched roof baggage-express cars from American Car & Foundry (ACF). and Pullman in 1914 and 1917, respectively.

They had the rounder arched-roof in comparison to later cars with a flatter and lower profile roof. According to the ACL diagram book, these cars classified as C-6 ?Express Cars? were 14?-4-3/4? high and 65?-4? coupled in length.

The A.C.F. built cars had 40,000 lbs of capacity while the Pullman cars were rated at 50,000 lbs. All cars were messenger equipped with a hopper.

The Pullman cars were equipped with mail stanchions. Underframe was fabricated steel fishbelly frame with flat panel ends. Insulation on these cars were ?1 course 3-ply Salamander? - hopefully insulated enough for the railroad agent working in these cars.

ACL served the Florida market well with their connecting interlined trains from Chicago (IC, C&EI, PRR) and New York (RF&P / PRR). ACL baggage cars showing up on PRR trains in New York were once routine.
