Description

The Illinois Central (IC) purchased a fleet of 64-ft baggage-express cars for U.S. Mail storage, express and baggage. This particular class of cars were P576 built by Pullman in 1918 (Lot 4523). They measured 60? 9-3/8? over the end sills, rode on 6-wheel trucks and weighted in about 116,000 lbs. They were built with fishbelly underframes and flat panel ends. Our model here shows it with newer ply-metal doors. IC assigned these cars to Railway Express and U.S. Mail storage traffic.

The Southern Express is a local train making all the stops from Chicago to New Orleans with a head end traffic and a rider coach. Also, it handled ?dead? returning Creole equipment back to New Orleans from Chicago. (The Creole was only a northbound train while the Southern Express was only a southbound train.) Our ?Southern Express? is no where in length of the real IC Southern Express. But you get the idea. It makes an ideal pocket size passenger train for your pike.
