This 40’ box car with double doors is painted gray with red bands and "The Challenger" logo and yellow lettering. It was built in September 1939 and runs on roller bearing trucks. With the trucking industry becoming a threat, the UP needed to retain business where the haul was less than 500 miles. This created the “Over Night Delivery” concept—to meet the demand for next day delivery. The UP called it their “Challenger Merchandise Service”. The cars were to travel with the passenger trains between overnight terminals. Since they were used in special service with passenger freight, the paint scheme had to match/blend with the passenger color scheme and yet be distinctive enough for the UP personnel.
