Kato - HO Scale - SD-45 Wisconsin Central 6677 (Details Installed) (SKU 381-371744A)

Available On: August 1, 2009

Prototype Information The SD45 is a reliable, heavy-duty locomotive that has been utilized by many different North American railroads at one time or another since its 1965 introduction to the railroading scene. Noteworthy as the first diesel locomotive with an engine of more than 16 cylinders, EMD would eventually build 1260 of these 3600-horsepower road switcher units in less than six years! More than twenty-five railroads bought these units new, and several more purchased them second-hand. Some of these users applied more than one paint scheme to the sides of the SD45 as well. A distinguishing mark of the SD45 is the flared radiator along the top edge of the long hood?s midsection.

Roadname Information - Wisconsin Central #6677 Perhaps the most notable locomotive in this release, WC 6677 was the VERY FIRST SD45 painted in WC colors! In fact, it was only the second locomotive painted in WC colors, following a GP35M by only a short time. It's paint scheme turned out to be unique, with the unit having wide V stripes on both ends. The 6677 was built as Frisco 929 in 1969 and renumbered as BN 6677 after the BN merger. It was sold to the WC and retained it's number until the mid to late-1990s. At this time, it was renumbered 6498 but was not repainted...only patched! It is possible to model 6498 with simple modifications to the model. 6498 was ultimately repainted after a rebuild and now carries the number 7498. Below is a photo from George R. Widener that shows the locomotive renumbered as 6498.
