In 1917 the New Haven ordered heavy passenger (1-C-1+1-C-1) motors from Baldwin-Westinghouse. Classed EP-2, the first five (0300-0304) were delivered in 1919, with 12 more (0305-0316) arriving in 1923-24 and the final group (0317-0326) arriving in 1927-28. The EP-2s gave good and faithful service until replaced by FL-9s and diesels. All EP-2s were condemned by 1959.

The next development in the NH boxcabs was the Class EP-3s of 1931. Build by General Electric, these 2-C+C-2 motors were capable of 70 mph in expresss service. A bit more rounded that the EP-2s, the EP-3s were the last box-cabs purchased by the New Haven, ending their careers by 1961.
