EMD's FL-9 almost was never built. Originally configured for western long haul railroads, as a complementary model to the FP-9, but boasting larger fuel and water tanks, that concept did not garner any customers. However, when the NH's Alpert administration finally decided to eliminate locomotive changes in New Haven, GM made a proposal, based on modifying the original FL-9 concept by adding third-rail
hardware and related equipment to provide run-through capability. Designated EDER-5, they operated as diesel-electrics, except into GCT, where they operated as outside third-rail electrics; hence the unique, electric-diesel-electric classification.
Still scorned by many purists, the new locomotives had numerous growing pains, and dispensed with the road's classic green and yellow livery in favor of the flashy
McGinnis black-red-white. Nevertheless, the locomotives eventually served the NewHaven and its successors for many decades, some even today. The models are finished in authentic colors and are fully assembled and ready to operate.
