Atlas - O Scale - 2-Rail - USRA Single Sheathed Box Car - Grand Rapids & Indiana #4850 / NYP&NRR #3111 - PRR Subsidiary 2 Pack (SKU 151-9695)

Available On: January 1, 2009

Prototype Information:

Designed by the United States Railway Administration during World War I, the first of these 50-ton outside-braced boxcars was built in October of 1918. The USRA design was so successful that many single-sheathed cars built through out the 1920s were virtual copies, or "clones" with a variation of the steel ends.

This unique 2-Pack recognizes cars from lesser-known subsidiaries of the mighty Pennsylvania RR. The Grand Rapids and Indiana RR. dated back to 1854 and stretched from Cincinnati, Ohio to northern Michigan. This line was formally purchased by the PRR in 1918. The GR&I reporting marks were maintained on the 450 single-sheathed cars received in September of 1919. Eventually all the cars were transferred to PRR series 596001 – 596450. The New York, Philadelphia and Norfolk Rail Road was created to connect the Norfolk, Virginia area with the Northeast by bypassing Washington DC. Trackage was constructed on the Delmarva peninsula from Pocomoke City, Maryland to Cape Charles, Virginia. The little NYP&NRR received 144 USRA Single-Sheathed Box Cars. These, too, were subsequently transferred to the PRR by the time of the Depression as PRR #97808-97947.
