HO CAB FORWARD LOCMOTIVES – THIRD PRODUCTION RUN 

The InterMountain cab forward steam locomotive is a very attractive model. Some have said that it is the most accurate, most highly detailed HO steam locomotive ever produced. On the other hand, some of the early purchasers of these models have been disappointed with the operating characteristics. The first run operated at a maximum scale speed of 35-45 scale mph. With re-gearing the second run reached a maximum speed of 55 scale mph. In addition, there were cases of overheating with prolonged operation.

During the past few weeks we have been testing several of the AC-12-s retrofitted with a more powerful, more efficient motor. The test results have been very good. For example:

1. One of the AC-12’s pulled 48 cars weighted to NMRA standard weight at 60 scale mph on a level test track. This test was discontinued after eight hours. During that time the locomotive neither slowed down nor showed any signs of overheating.

2. Another of the test locomotives pulled 22 cars up the 2.2% grade helix on the layout at the Greeley Model Railroad Museum.

3. A maximum speed test was done at over 75 scale mph.

4. Several other tests were done of over four hours with similar results.

 As a result of the above tests, we have re-opened the reservations for the current releases of the HO cab forwards, including AC-8’s, AC-10’s, AC-11’s, and AC-12’s. The reservations will be open until October 31 at which time we will place our order for those locomotives on reservation. Please note that the price of this entire production run has been increased to cover the rising costs of production and the increased cost of the new motor. The sound units have been increased by $10.00 and the non-sound units have been increased by $20.00. As indicated on the new memo page, the sound units are priced at $479.95 and the non-sound units are priced at $369.95.

 In addition to the new locomotives we will be offering a factory retrofit of the new motor for any of the previous production. The cost will be $75.00 including return freight. Motors will also be available at a moderate cost for those modelers wishing to do the replacement themselves.
