The B&O M-53 boxcar was a unique and innovative design. Developed in the 1930’s, it was one of the most distinctive designs of the late steam era and example continued on into the early diesel years. U shaped frame members were attached to the car underframe. Steel sheets were then attached to form the shell of the car. This unique approach was also applied to the cabooses and covered hoppers. The design proved to be very durable with 1897 or the original 2000 cars remaining in service in 1960. If you are a B&O fan of this era, you have been waiting for this car. And if you model any railroad that pulled any B&O cars in this time period, you will want some of these distinctive cars for your layout too.
