In June 1993, Steam returned to Central Illinois for 2 days as The Norfolk Southern Railways Steam Program ran two excursions during the weekend of June 5th,1993.

These excursions followed the NS St. Louis District from St. Louis to Centralia, Illinois, then south on Burlington Northern Rails to Sesser, Illinois and Return. The power for the trips was the National Museum of Transportations Frisco 1522, at the time, the country's only operational 4-8-2 "Mountain" Type locomotive.

The 1522 was in tip-top shape and ran flawlessly during the excursion.
