A Little History:

We are pleased to announce new road numbers in our series of HOn3 Tank Cars. As in our first release, these tank cars represent the narrow frame and frameless UTLX cars that traversed the Denver and Rio Grande Western and Rio Grande Southern Railroads track throughout Colorado from the 1920s and into the 1960s. Our latest release features three frameless “Gramps” tank cars and three narrow frame tank cars.

The narrow frame UTLX cars were built in the 1920s by using old standard gauge tank cars and mounting the tanks on steel channel framework. These cars were equipped with 4 8 archbar style trucks.

The UTLX frameless tank cars are well known as the GRAMPS cars. Originally built from former standard gauge cars in the early 1930s, many of this class had the prominent silver letters emblazoned across the sides of the tank cars around 1939 while transporting oil from Chama NM, to the Alamosa CO, refinery.

Now available are three Narrow Frame Tank Car numbers featuring the UTLX yellow lettering, road numbers 13178, 13036, and 12975. Also available are three frameless style tank cars with the “Gramps” logo. These are UTLX road numbers 55276, 55190, and 55347. All road numbers will be available both weathered and non-weathered.
