The first Dual Powered (Diesel / Electric) Locomotive: FL-9

NYC would not allow Diesels in the tunnels to Manhattan, so EMD came up with a dual powered locomotive. Needed for service from Manhattan to Boston, this incredible design could switch from Electric 3rd rail pickup until out of the Park Avenue tunnel, and then could switch to using it's 1800 H.P. 16 cylinder diesel power plant on the fly. It was a diesel up to the tunnel, then using a 3rd rail shoe, was an electric locomotive into Grand Central Station.
