General Electric's Universal Series
Santa Fe's Passenger "U-BOATS"
the CGs - Models: U28CG and U30CG

After G.E.'s experiments with the UM20B and the UD18, General Electric was ready to enter the road diesel market. The U25B roared onto the scene in 1960. The U25B was powered by the newly introduced 2,500-hp. FDL16 engine, and features included a central air system, pressurized engine and control compartments, advanced wheel-slip control and an improved cooling system. The first G.E. demonstrators (751,752) hit the road during 1960, visiting 14 roads and racking up over 61,000 miles. They were followed by G.E. 753-756, the first production U25Bs. These wore high short hoods and redesigned front platforms, steps and walkways, and toured over 74,000 miles on nine roads.

The Union Pacific and the Frisco were the first customers and they were followed by fifteen other roads. Production ended in February 1966, with 478 units produced.

Division Point will produce models of all customers, as well as those acquired by other railroads due to mergers or secondary sale. Contact your dealer to reserve yours!

The introduction of the 2,800-hp U28C six-axle locomotive, coupled with room for steam generator equipment in all "Universal car-bodies in the basic carbody opened the door for replacement of Santa Fe passenger EMD F-units. To this end the Santa Fe prevailed upon G.E. to produce the U28CG. Arriving in 1966, the first (and only) U28CGs sported a simplified "Warbonnet" paint scheme and were numbered 350-359. G.E.'s horsepower increases resulted in another ATSF special order. Installing a non-structural fluted steel cowl body and steam gereating equipment on a U30C frame gave the Santa Fe the U30CGs. These were delivered in 1967 in "Warbonnet" dress, numbered 400-405.

After participating in several derailments, the U28CGs and U30CGs were removed from passenger service. After removal of their steam generator equipment, the CGs were assigned to premier Piggy-Back trains, and in 1969/70 U28GCs were renumbered to the 7900-7905, with U30GSs renumbered to 8000-8005. All later received blue and yellow freight paint.

Division Point is offering both U28CGs and U30CGs in all number series and paint schemes. Don't delay – reserve yours today!
