The Battle of Bull Run, also known as First Manassas, was the first major land battle of the Civil War. As the battle raged Confederate forces were pushed back until reinforcements arrived by railroad and the Confederates surged to brake the Union’s right flank. The Union retreat quickly deteriorated into a rout and the relatively unknown Confederate colonel, Thomas J. Jackson, earned the nickname “Stonewall” for standing ground against Union forces.
