With more than 23,000 casualties, the two-day Battle at Shiloh was, at that time, the bloodiest battle in American history. On the first day of fighting, Union troops were caught off guard by a Confederate attack. By afternoon, they had formed a battle line to hold their position. The fighting continued until after dark. By the next morning, Union reinforcements arrived, outnumbering the Confederates. A Union counter-offensive overpowered the Confederate forces.
