“The Great Locomotive Chase” was a military raid that took place on April 12, 1862 in northern Georgia where volunteers from the Union Army commandeered the Confederate’s W&ARR engine, the “General”. They took it north toward Chattanooga, doing as much damage to the line as possible. Confederate forces pursued by foot and later by locomotive. Some of the raiders were caught and executed as spies. The escapees, called Andrew’s Raiders, were later awarded the Medal of Honor.
