The Battle of Antietam was fought on Wednesday, September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, and Antietam Creek. It was part of the Maryland Campaign and was the first major battle in the American Civil War to take place on Union soil. It was the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, with about 23,000 dead, wounded and missing on both sides combined. The battle of Antietam led to Abraham Lincoln’s issuance of the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.
