The final battle between General Lee’s Confederate Army and Lt. General Grant’s Union Army was fought on April 9, 1865. General Lee hoped to rejoin his Confederate forces in North Carolina, but was cut off by the Union Army and was forced to make his last stand at Appomattox Court House. Unable to break through the Union line, Lee surrendered his Confederate Army. The surrender documents were signed on April 12th, marking the official end of the war.
