When Amtrak took over passenger service from the railroads, they inherited the remaining rolling stock that was left. In many cases, this was a varied mix of passenger car types, many in less than wonderful condition. Parts of the Santa Fe fleet were a notable exception to this. The Hi-Level Budd cars were a very modern design and in good condition. These cars served as the basic template for the Superliner cars that are standard on many Amtrak long distance trains today. In fact, these cars were so good, that a few remain in service even today as parlour cars on the Amtrak Coast Starlight.
