Built during World War II after war restrictions put a limit on new diesel locomotives, the EM-1 was the last steam locomotive class used by the B&O. This simple articulated engine provided tremendous power at high speeds, making it an ideal hauler of heavy loads through the mountains of West Virginia. The B&O president, Roy B. White, was so impressed after viewing the first one that he exclaimed, “Well, I must say, they have everything!”
